Understanding Our Process
A. Understanding Your Vision and Creating An Estimate
We first start off by learning about all the details that you want for your cabinetry. One of the best ways to reach out to us is by emailing the architectural drawings and rough sketches with dimensions and specs. After we understand the scope of work we can provide you the first cost estimate. This will begin the planning phase, and we can assist you with making the final decisions on what you want.
B. Crafting the Design
Then we proceed to create the design, by collaborating with you to make sure we have an accurate understanding of your intentions. We can communicate either through email or phone, or we can join you on-site to confirm the space measurements. At this point we get your confirmations for the final plan, get an estimated end date for the project, and we will know the materials we need. At the end of this phase we will know the cost of the project.
C. Final Drawings and Down Payment
At this time St Joseph Custom Cabinets provides you a precise payment schedule, based on the finalized designs. The payment process coincides with the remaining phases of the project, the final designs, building of the furniture, and the final installation.
After you have given the final confirmation on the plans and submitted the first payment, your project is placed in our schedule. We will provide drawings the specify the measurements and necessary materials. We need to have a final approval before going to fabrication, as changes will result in a much longer delivery date. As soon as we receive your final approval the fabrication phase will initiate.
D. Putting the Cabinets Together, and the On-site Installation
This is where everything comes together. We will fabricate all the custom cabinetry and bespoke furniture here at our facilities. When your cabinets are ready, we take them to your property and begin the onsite installation. You will receive your last bill after the completion of the installation, generally taking between 4 to 8 weeks. The project’s overall turnaround time depends on the scope of work, which includes design, details, materials, time, and labor.
Cabinet Door Styles
A major part of the look of a cabinet is the type of door style, so choosing the right door is important if you are going for a certain look. There are two major structural elements of cabinet doors that change the appearance, the way that the door is attached, and the cabinet door style. Each will have a major effect on the aesthetic of your cabinet.
Cabinet Door Orientation
Partial overlay cabinets expose more of the frame, with about 1” to 2” of the frame exposed.
Inset doors have the cabinet door set into the frame, fully flush with the face of the frame when closed. Like the full overlay door, the inset door makes the face of the cabinet flat.
The full-overlay cabinet door nearly covers the entire face of the cabinet, which creates a flat sleek look between cabinet units. The smooth transition from one cabinet to the next is a popular look in the modern style.
The Differences in Cabinet Door Styles
The flat-panel or slab door is simply a single panel of wood, and it’s flat design complements the modern or utilitarian look.
Open frame doors do not have a center panel, and instead has a piece of glass, which allows for complete visibility into the cabinet.
The recessed panel door creates the effect that the center panel is slightly indented into the cabinet, which creates a sleeker streamline look and feel. This style is used a lot in modern trends and offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to design options.
Mullion frame doors have vertical and horizonal bars that breakdown the face of the cabinet into sections. The empty space between the mullions holds either transparent or frosted glass panes.
Raised panel doors have a center panel that is slightly raised for style effect. Raised panel doors are a very popular and can be seen on classic to current day cabinets.
Custom Hardwood Countertops
Countertops are the functional centerpiece of any kitchen. They are used for chopping, cooking, cleaning, storing utensils, and even become your dining table for the busy person on the move! Kitchen countertops get daily usage, so making a custom hardwood countertop is an awesome way to give your kitchen a quick makeover.
Because countertops of the constant activity your countertop must host, picking a solid and durable hardwood like hickory is the place to start. At St Joseph Custom Cabinets we provide the top of the line custom hardwood countertops, that will look remarkable, be tough enough to endure for years and years. Some examples of widely used cuts of wood for countertops could be knotty pine, poplar, and maple. Contact us today, and we can help you choose the right wood that makes sense for you, as well as help you plan out the custom shapes and sizes of your new countertop.
Colors, Finishes, and Stains
In addition to the style of your cabinet doors, the size and shape, the type of materials, you can also add more character by choosing a finish. Cabinet finishes are treatments applied to the surface of your cabinets which adds more resistance to the scratches and dents and can either be subtly or significantly change the appearance.
Waterborne finishes are very ecofriendly, add scratch resistance to your wood surface, and is extremely customizable in it’s ability to alter the color of your wood. When a waterborne finish dries, it leaves behind a solvent and resin, which binds to the wood. If you have a piece where you love the natural look of the woods patterns and colors, waterborne finishes is a great choice.
A glaze finish adds a layer on top of painted or stained wood, which is used to get a desired color or texture from wood. It is usually transparent, and will add an additional depth to the look of your cabinets, as well as extra durability. Painting your cabinets gives you the freedom to totally alter the color of the wood. One popular option is to paint your cabinets a flat white color. There are a ton of options out there, and the expert craftsmen at St Joseph Custom Cabinets are here to help, so give us a call today.
